KERALA MURALS

Kerala mural paintings are the frescoes depicting mythology and legends, which are drawn on the walls of temples and churches in South India, principally in Kerala. Ancient temples, churches and palaces in Kerala, South India, display an abounding tradition of mural paintings mostly dating back between the 9th to 12th centuries when this form of art enjoyed Royal patronage.

Kerala holds the second place in having the largest collection of archaeologically important mural sites, the first being Rajasthan. The mural tradition of Kerala evolved as a complement to her unique Architectural style. It is characterized by their liner accuracy, the adherence to color symbolism, elaborate ornamentations and sensitive portrayal of emotions.

Above everything else it opens out to the viewer a fascinating world of colors, holding out against human apathy and negligence as well as the ravage of time. From the 17th through 19th century the art of decorating temple and palace walls was predominantly a part of religious art. Auspicious stories from Vedas, Puranas, Agamas and pictures from the dhyana slokas painted in appropriate colors, proportions and moods yield excellent results to the house and the artist.

Jayachandran ( YECHARAN ) acquired expertise in mural art under the guidance of Guru Mammiyur Krishnan Kutty Nair at the Guruvayur Mural Institute from 1990 to 1995. Inspired by the teachings and blessings of numerous renowned artists, he established TATVAMASI MURAL ARTS in New Delhi in 1998. Shri: Ramaswamy Venkataraman, the former Honorable President of India, honored him with a gold medal.

He has made significant contributions to several
institutions, including the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nirman Bhawan, Gandhi Smriti Multi-Media Museum in New Delhi, Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple, Mayur vihar Phase 1 New Delhi, The Center for Mohiniyattam, Maha Rishi Ashram, Aditya Birla Museum in Pilani, Rajasthan, The Crossing Project in Varanasi, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), and many institutions in Kerala, such as Sri Chitra Enclave and Sri Padmanabha Temple, among others.

Teaching students about mural art can be an enriching experience, especially when you connect it to contemporary themes and cultural heritage. Here’s a structured approach to finding and teaching students interested in painting, using the essence of mural art, with a focus on contemporary relevant topics.Like the art form of Kathakali, popularized Kerala mural art all over the world.

OUR VISION

Tanjore paintings have become an indispensable item for beautifying the home environment of every Tamilian. Similarly, there should be Kerala Mural Paintings in the reception rooms of Keralite houses to greet them. Even tiny temples should be enriched with Murals.
